Face Food

face-food

In a Utopian society, products would always be pure and food would always be wholesome (among other things).  Since this is not the case as a consumer, you must be discerning when collecting items to bring into your home for your family to use and take into their bodies.  I do my best but sometimes, it’s not easy, especially considering the high cost of quality items vs. the more affordable price tag of crap.

(To preface, I’m not claiming this is for everyone, it’s just what works for me).

For the time being, these are some of the products I utilize in my household.

I use this in everything from my hand soap dispenser to my homemade laundry detergents and shampoos.  It’s multi-purpose and lasts forever.

This stuff is like crack to me.  I go nuts over their seasonal Gingerbread scent.  I do a TON of dishes throughout the day (the downside of living in the kitchen), and it makes the process that much more pleasant.  (Don’t judge me because I hoard the stuff–they only release it during the holidays, after all).

Despite the fact that the cosmetics industry has long been toting the benefits of “oil-free” products, I swear by this as the most blissful and hydrating gloss that’s really made a difference with moisturizing my skin for long periods of time.  I particularly love to swipe it around the thinner skin of my eyes.  (If you find it too expensive, they sell sweet almond oil in bulk at my health food store and they may at yours).

Oats: not only do they lower your cholesterol, they keep you full longer and also fit snugly into the “gluten-free” category.  I not only have a large bin of steel cut oats for cookies or breakfast, I also love to steep fistfuls of the instant variety under warm water and use it as an “exfoliating” scrub.  It really calms and soothes my skin.  I purchase mine in bulk to drive down the cost {though, they’re not too expensive to begin with}

Of all the previous things mentioned, this isn’t the greatest of smells but I really like it as a toner/astringent and hair rinse for super shiny hair.  When rinsed thoroughly, the smell won’t linger.  I know lots of people that take it as a drink but it’s way too harsh for me, even diluted but more power to those that can withstand it (my Daddy included).

Slices of citrusy sunshine that when paired with organic, granulated sugar, makes for the best skin brightening scrub.  (I call it my lemonade scrub).  There are a variety of uses for lemon (Meyer Lemon Squares anyone?  Yum)! but I also like to use lemon + vinegar + water as an all purpose cleaner.  Not only is it cheap and effective for the aforementioned reasons, it’s really great in brightening up yellowed fingernails due to over polish–I would know because I paint my nails like its my job, lol.

I love Avocados and have been known to sit there and eat these with a spoon.  (Don’t judge me =D )  If I haven’t eaten them all, I mash a ripe Avocado and mix it with a tablespoon of raw honey and allow it to soak into my face as a mask for 20-30 minutes.

So, here’s my quick run down of the all natural skin products that I use on a daily basis.  If you enjoyed this, I’ll also post about my favorite all natural/health foods as well

Love & Lemons,

Your Squishy Monster

Hey there! Thanks for visiting me. I have to admit, I saw you ‘name’ and a huge grin went across my face immediately. How cool to have a name that makes people smile just by looking at it!

    Gingerbread dish soap? Must find!

  • The Squishy Monster says:

That’s the best compliment that “TSM” has ever personally received. She thanks you, lol.

OOh, that’s a great tip about lemons helping polish-stained nails. I always have lemons in the house because I drink lemon water alll the time, but i never thought of using it for other health/beauty stuff. My nails tend to get stained if I use a dark polish, so that’s a great tip!

  • Choc Chip Uru says:

Avocado and honey…mmmm…delicious and great for your face…I’d be too sad to part with these from my mouth but I’m tempted to try now.

  • The Squishy Monster says:

lol, right? That’s always my dilemma.

  • J.B. says:

So do you use all of these products everyday, or just as they’re needed? I’ve been trying to take better care of my skin lately, but it just seems so complicated when I look at how other people care for theirs…
For the time being I’ve been sticking with tea tree oil, soap and water, and lotion, but things like your oat scrub sound simple enough for me to use as well. :3

  • Liz says:

Great list of products! I’m going to look for the Gingerbread dish soap, too. And suddenly I’m craving an avocado :)

  • The Squishy Monster says:

    I’ve got half bottle left!

  • The Squishy Monster says:

I use the oatmeal scrub, apple cider vinegar, and almond oil everyday, the lemonade scrub twice a week or so, and masks when I remember. I love tea tree but it really dries out my fingers. I swear by it when I’m breaking out!

  • Suzie says:

I use the Bragg’s also, most of the other stuff I haven’t heard of with aside from lemon and avocados…ha ha! I like the “mask” idea with the avocado too :) Keep on posting your great ideas, I enjoy them! Oh yeah, I can’t drink the Bragg’s either…I tried and yes, too harsh.

  • The Squishy Monster says:

Thanks for the tip on whitening nails. I go through nail polish phases and always stop once they start getting yellow b/c it bugs me and I haven’t found anything that whitens them yet. No judgy on the avocados, I too will eat them with a spoon. So good. P.S. I buy Bragg’s too. :)

  • Sissi says:

Thank you for all the precious tips! I had no idea about the vinegar (I wonder if it works for all types of hair or only the Asian, thick, glossy, beautiful ones which don’t need any enhancers
I never buy Weleda products because of their ugly packaging… Frankly it comes from the 80s! But I will trust you and go today to check the oil (your eye tip sounds great, do you also use it during the night?), I have these 100 m from my house :-) When I was a teenager oat masks were advised against acne!

It’s like Starbucks with their pumpkin spice–I for one, would buy both year round.

  • The Squishy Monster says:

From what I understand, it’s suppose to work for all hair types. I would experiment with both that and beer.

  • The Squishy Monster says:

I love the sound my spoon makes when it scrapes against the exocarp, there’s something so strangely satisfying about it. HAHA, I know, I’m weird.

  • The Squishy Monster says:

Yay…I hope you enjoy yourself this weekend, Tandy!

  • J.B. says:

  • Mr Clean says:

I love clean stuff….I use industrial bleach and UV-C lights for those stubborn stains.
I’ll have to try some of these eco friendly cleaners, they look very nice.

  • Charles says:

lol, I had a leftover avocado once and tried to mush it into a face-mask for myself… except it wasn’t very ripe and so it had big hard avocado chunks in the mush. Boy did I look funny with that all squished over my face

Hi Angie, thank you so much for sharing all the useful information. Occasionally I drink apple cider with honey but didn’t realize can use it as hair conditioner. I shall try that to give my hair extra shine. LOL

I love anything lemon. I love 1/2 lemon + 3 tomatoes blend into juice mix with 2tsp honey drink half hour before breakfast 3 times a week. Beauty juice for skin complexion.

Have a nice week ahead, regards.

  • The Squishy Monster says:

You know what they say about great minds =)

  • The Squishy Monster says:

Thank you for a great idea! I bet the honey does impart a bit of mellowness to cut through the bitterness—I’m a dope, lol.
