St. Croix Art Farm & Taste of St. Croix Artist, Farmer Luca

Farmer Luca at Art Farm was one of the first people we met when we arrived to our little island home.  His farm also made a cameo in one of the first videos I ever made about St. Croix.  He grows some “impossible” crops on our side of the island, which is on the east end.  This is a great feat considering that we don’t get as much rain as the west end “rainforest.”  Here, we have cacti dotted all around the landscape and crops are just generally harder to grow but Luca makes it happen.

They supply local produce to many restaurants on island and on Wednesdays and Saturdays, they operate their farm stand which you can read more about here.  Luca and his wife Christina have been feeding the community for almost 2 decades yet his passion for it is still tangible.

They call it Art Farm as both Luca and Christina are life long lovers of art.  He told me that they even met in art school.  Luca is the designated artist for the Taste of St. Croix.  He paints the poster for them every year.  With their Farm of Art, they are able to fuse two of their passions.  Set against an idyllic Caribbean setting, they are situated with the ocean on the right and the mountains to the left and the farm itself is a work of art.

When you first walk onto their farm, you walk through their Art Barn where Luca gets together every week with his friends to create art.  Beyond the barn is an abundant farm setting with crops that even Luca didn’t think could survive on the South Shore of St. Croix.  He was excited to show us his cacao and dragon fruit, among other things.  He told me that when Martha Stewart visited, she was most excited about the recao aka culantro {similar to cilantro.}

If you’re ever in St. Croix, definitely check out Art Farm and tell them The Squishy Monster sent you!
