My Natural Cold Remedies + FIRE CIDER Recipe

Preventative Care

Elderberry and Lemon Water

When I feel a sickness coming on, elderberry syrup does wonders to either nip it in the bud or drastically cut down recovery time.  However, I’ve noticed that my daily lemon waters also help to minimize the frequency of sick days.  It may seem cliche to say it, but lots of vitamin C and sunshine can do wonders.  I also take this multivitamin which is a one-a-day food based one and of course, drink my daily green smoothie that you know I’m just obsessed with.

Treating Sickness

Apple Cider Vinegar & Manuka Honey

A simple tonic of warm, not hot- so you don’t kill the beneficial properties from the ACV, mixed with a squeeze of lemon and a drizzle of Manuka Honey {which is antimicrobial, antiviral and antibacterial} is soothing and comforting to drink.  You can take a teaspoon of Manuka Honey 3 times a day as it is also an anti-inflammatory.  You can also use the vinegar as a mouth gargle to soothe a sore throat.

A few facts about Manuka Honey: it is produced by bees pollinating the Manuka trees found only in New Zealand.  It is known for its non-peroxide activity and exclusive compound, Methylglyoxal where its medicinal and antibacterial benefits are derived.  It’s distinguished by regular honey by its higher levels of enzymes and nutritional value.

The infamous FIRE CIDER Recipe:

  • 1/4 cup each of freshly grated ginger and horseradish root
  • 1 tb freshly grated turmeric and garlic
  • 1 ts whole peppercorns
  • 1 small chopped onion
  • 1 whole head of fresh, chopped garlic
  • 1 tb each of chopped parsley, rosemary and thyme
  • 1 chopped jalapeno pepper
  • 1 lemon and 1 orange, both sliced
  • Apple cider vinegar, with the mother and at least 5% acidity
  • 2 tb manuka honey

Pour all of these ingredients {except the honey and apple cider} into a large jar with a plastic lid.  Cover with apple cider and store in a cool dark place for about a month.  Shake occasionally.  After a month, strain and sweeten as desired with manuka honey.  Take 1-2 tablespoons as needed.  If taking it straight up is unappealing, try making a tea with warm water {not hot so you don’t kill any beneficial enzymes} and sweeten with honey.  You could also mix it with juice {or a bloody mary} or make a salad vinaigrette.

Facial Steam

I find that it’s ultra comforting to breathe in steam to allow it to open up my sinuses as well as bringing moisture back to my skin.  I simply boil what is essentially a turmeric/ginger tea and when it reaches a boil, allow it to cool slightly and drape a towel over my head to capture the steam onto my face.  You could also do this with green/white tea as well.  A warm epsom salt bath is also very nice for a whole body experience.

Detoxifying Mask and Drink

Activated charcoal shouldn’t be part of your regular routine but if you’re looking for some extra detox, it’s wonderful as both an internal medicine and topical application.  I typically make a plain banana-berry smoothie and add in 1 ts of the charcoal.  Frozen fruit whips up into a creamy frosty concoction and you can’t even taste the charcoal {which is pretty tasteless to begin with}.  However, it does turn it into a bold beautiful black color.  As a mask, I like to mix 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of activated charcoal with bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar until a paste forms and spread it all over my face and neck.  I wipe it off when it just begins to harden and these two things help me to flush out extra toxins and detoxify.

Homemade Lozenges

My homemade lozenges are soothing when you need quick relief from a sore throat.  Making my own ensures that I’m only getting what I need and not any funky extras like red no. 40.  Mine are simply made with just a couple of ingredients and can be endlessly customized with your desired set of herbs or tinctures.
