2 Ingredient Homemade Lip Balm / Chapstick

Chapstick

I have a confession to make.  I am a lip balm addict.  It’s clearly just psychosomatic but nonetheless, the struggle is real.  I shudder when I reflect back on how much money I’ve spent over the years on store bought sticks when I came to the realization that I could produce my own for mere pennies.  $.20 to be exact, maybe even less depending on where you source your ingredients from and if you buy in bulk.  For awhile there, I even had my own personal source for beeswax as J was an avid beekeeper before our move.  It’s something that he’s set on building back up again once the weather starts warming up, which brings me to another point.  It doesn’t hurt to ask your local beekeepers association for any leads on procuring some viable beeswax while you’re hunting down raw, local honey {which does wonders for allergies!}

If you can’t find beeswax near you, you can find a reputable one online like this one.

The best part of this homemade lip balm is that it couldn’t be less fussy requiring just 2 ingredients and you’re just 30 minutes away from all natural lip balm from scratch.  This lip balm is all natural yet its nourishing power is incredible.  It rivals some of the more expensive “luxury” brands out there that I’ve tried and makes my lips feel so baby soft and smooth.  It glides on beautifully and just hugs your lips.  I found that with some store bought brands, I was having to constantly reapply and this just isn’t the case with this one.  From my research, I discovered than a ton of mainstream brands purposely inject menthol or camphor in their products which actually dries out the lips.  My homemade version is clear cut and straightforward with just wholesome, beneficial coconut oil {I’m partial to the unrefined, virgin organic variety} and beeswax to stabilize the product to allow it to go on effortlessly.  Before, I was pretty much tied to my lip balm tube and would stop what I was doing to go hunt it down if I couldn’t place it.  Nowadays, I have a tube sitting next to my bed on my nightstand with a bulk stock stored underneath my sink.  I still need and want my lip balm but figure if it’s going to be such a devoted obsession of mine, I’m happy knowing that I’m not wasting tons of unnecessary money on it and can produce a stick that’s healthy, minimal, and is fun to make and feels great on.

2 Ingredient Homemade Lip Balm

Author:

Ingredients
  • 1 part organic beeswax {for example, .50 oz}
  • 2 parts organic coconut oil {for example, 1.00 oz}
  • Optional: essential oils, honey, beet root/hibiscus powder, etc.

Instructions
  1. Use dedicated materials for all the following.
  2. Grate the beeswax.
  3. Melt the wax low and slow in a double boiler or in a heat proof vessel in the microwave. Use a vessel with a spout like a measuring cup. Heat until just melted, no more.
  4. Stir in the oil.
  5. Wait 5-10 seconds to stir in the optional add-ins if using.
  6. Carefully pour into desired containers and allow to set for 30 minutes.

Notes
About .10 oz wax to .20 oz oil yields one tube.
Mine last for about a year when stored in a jar in a dark, cool place.
Steer away from camphor or menthol as they dry out the lips.

Love,

Your Squishy Monster

    Sweeeeet. I really need to get myself some beeswax b/c I was looking at other homemade bath/beauty products (I think it was a lotion balm or something) that called for it too. Love how simple this is! My sister sells her homemade lip balms but she puts so much stuff in them, I didn’t know they could be so easy.

  • Shu says:

    This is genius!!!! I’m generally quite against chemicals in all beauty products but am especially particular about lip products because we basically eat like half of it. I’ve been shelving out loads for natural lip balms- this is fantastic!

    For reeeeal though!! I feel like I’m dying each time –my friend says the goal is 3 minutes? Get outta here!

  • Keith says:

    Are these measured by weight or volume?
    Good warning about ‘dedicated materials’; wax is very hard to get off of untensils and you DO NOT want it in your drain pipes.

  • The Squishy Monster says:

    Hi, Keith! It’s either or. Example: 1 oz wax per 2 oz oil or 1 c wax to 2 c oil =)

  • Carol says:

    Loved the 2 ingredient lip balm so easy,have tryed others but this one really works. Thanks Squishy monster

    Huge hugs, Carol!

  • Julie says:

    This was so easy to make, but mine came out rather hard. Had to rub really hard on lips, and not creamy. Any idea of what I may have did wrong? I measured exactly on my scale too.

  • The Squishy Monster says:

    Hi, Julie. Hm, that’s strange. If you’re living in a cooler climate, you may need to add a bit more oil or use less wax but not much more. Typically, if your product is too hard, it means there’s too much wax but it really shouldn’t veer too much off the 1 part wax to 2 parts oil ratio.

  • Julie says:

    Im wanting to make your 2 ingredient lip balm but i would like to add liquorice powder.
    Just asking how much powder to use ?

  • The Squishy Monster says:

    Hi, Julie! It may have a difficult time emulsifying together. Try just adding the smallest amount possible that you’re happy with. It has a tendency to settle. Perhaps employ the use of an emulsion blender to help it along.
